Writing in the boat
Levitt identified the Shahadah in the boat writing as a profession of faith that was not inherently extremist. He allowed that personal influence could contribute but doubted that conversations alone explained the close parallels he identified with radical texts. He acknowledged that the slogans could be learned quickly and that he could not scientifically determine how much material the writer needed to have absorbed.
About
Cross-examination tested alternative explanations for the boat writing, including personal conversations and ordinary religious statements, while Levitt maintained that its close textual parallels were particularly telling.
