About
Alan Hern testified for the prosecution on Day 28 about the second Marathon explosion and the injuries to his 11-year-old son, Aaron. He described moving with family and friends from the first explosion site to the Forum area, where the second blast occurred directly in front of the group. He took Abigail to safety at a restaurant before returning to find Aaron severely injured.
Hern described Aaron's major left-thigh wound, other leg injuries, and singed hair and eyebrows. Bystanders applied a belt as a tourniquet and carried Aaron toward an ambulance. Hern also described a jagged metal piece beside Aaron's head without identifying its source. He recounted the search that located Aaron at Boston Children's Hospital, further surgery and treatment, 62 staples across his legs, and a nine-day hospital stay.
During his testimony, Hern identified Aaron and himself in photographs of the rescue scene. The court admitted photographs numbered 29, 27, and 28; the defense maintained its earlier objection to the latter two. His account described the immediate effects of the second explosion and the assistance Aaron received. The defense declined cross-examination.
