About
Danling Zhou testified for the prosecution on Day 29 about the explosions outside the Forum restaurant, where she was with her friend Lingzi Lu. She said she initially did not recognize the first explosion as a bomb and tried to reassure Lu. Her next recollection after the second explosion was of being against a fence, temporarily unable to hear and suffering a severe abdominal wound.
Zhou described holding her wound, being unable to stand, and seeing an injury to Lu's thigh. She initially thought Lu would survive. She recounted emergency assistance, eardrum injuries, nerve damage affecting her right leg, surgery, and readmission for infection. She estimated that she spent approximately 20 to 30 days in the hospital. Unable to speak in the ICU, she wrote requests for others to find Lu and later learned that her friend had died.
During direct examination by Aloke Chakravarty, photographs were used to establish Zhou's and Lu's positions and illustrate the aftermath. Six photographs were admitted without objection, and two previously admitted aftermath photographs were displayed. Zhou expressly qualified parts of her recollection, including the timing of learning about Lu's death. Her testimony concerned the blast's effects; she did not identify anyone who placed or detonated a bomb. The defense declined cross-examination.
