About

Erika Brannock delivered an unsworn victim-impact statement at sentencing on Day 67. She acknowledged that Tsarnaev had not placed the pressure-cooker bomb directly behind her, but attributed her injuries to his participation in planning the attack.

Brannock described losing part of her left leg and later consenting to an above-the-knee amputation so she could support a prosthesis. She reported serious damage to her right leg and 21 surgeries since the bombing, including treatment for damaged eardrums, fractured bones, and embedded nails and BBs. She credited Amanda North with helping her obtain aid and providing a belt to stop her bleeding.

Her statement connected those injuries to continuing limits on walking and her inability to perform the physical duties of teaching two-year-olds. She also described flashbacks, panic attacks, an anticipated lifelong financial burden, and being unable to complete her master's program because of physical and mental limitations. She concluded that the attack would not break her spirit or her determination to pursue her goals.
