About

Jeffrey Rolands testified for the prosecution on Day 30 about leading evidence recovery at Scene A, the first explosion site outside Marathon Sports. The FBI special agent described secured access, safety sweeps, multiagency teams with bomb technicians, and gridded searches. He explained how items were photographed in place, mapped, packaged, and entered into an electronic tracking system.

Rolands said collection continued from April 16 through April 21, 2013, and yielded more than 450 items; he believed the total was 458. Searches reached rooftops, ledges, streets, building interiors, and the public library. He identified collection information for BBs packaged in a paint can and explained their transfer through Black Falcon pier to the FBI laboratory. Those BBs were admitted without objection as Exhibit 421.

His testimony also identified limits in his recollection and the collection records. He could not recall Grid 2C's location, and the documentation did not show which of two individuals performed each collection role. The defense asked him no questions.
