About
Katherine Lindstrom testified for the prosecution on Day 41 about the autopsy she performed on Lingzi Lu on April 16, 2013. A medical examiner employed by the Boston Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, she determined that Lu died from blast injuries to the lower extremities and classified the manner of death as homicide.
Under Steven D. Mellin's questioning, Lindstrom explained that blast debris severed Lu's left femoral artery and vein, causing rapid blood loss. She estimated that death occurred within seconds to minutes rather than immediately and described the injuries as very painful. When asked about consciousness, she said Lu possibly remained conscious until death, without expressing certainty. Her testimony addressed the medical mechanism of death, not the identity or intent of whoever caused the blast.
Lindstrom identified autopsy photographs and recovered metal evidence. Three autopsy photographs, a photograph of recovered metal pieces and a package containing two pieces were admitted, and Exhibit 844 was displayed to jurors. The court warned jurors that the autopsy photographs were graphic. The defense asked no questions.
