About
Richard Donohue addressed the Court at sentencing on Day 67 in an unsworn victim impact statement. The Transit Police officer described chronic pain and continuing limitations following his injuries in Watertown.
Earlier, emergency physician Heather Studley testified about treating Donohue after he was shot on April 19, 2013. She described his arrival without breathing or a heartbeat, near-total blood loss, and emergency measures that restored circulation. Renewed hemorrhaging required pressure on the wound before surgery. She also discussed intensive care and rehabilitation, qualifying her recollection of transfusion quantities and portions of his later treatment. Her testimony addressed the medical consequences of the shooting, not who fired the shot.
Donohue's injuries were also a specific issue under the carjacking charge. The Court instructed that resulting injury need not occur during the initial taking if caused by the carjacker while retaining the vehicle. The jury subsequently found that the carjacking resulted in serious bodily injury to Donohue. His sentencing statement described the continuing effects of those injuries in his own account.
