About
Roy Howard testified for the defense on Day 58 about coaching Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, whom he called Jahar, for three years at Cambridge Rindge and Latin. Under questioning by Timothy G. Watkins, he described Jahar as quiet and hardworking and credited his leadership and dedication to teammates with earning him a co-captain position in his junior year.
Howard said he never met Jahar's parents, discussed wrestling demands with them, or saw them at practices, meets, tournaments, or Senior Day. He did not explain their absence. He recalled Jahar returning to practice in 2012, possibly twice, and again in 2013, but reported no further contact after those visits until court.
Howard said participation in the bombings was inconsistent with the boy he had coached. A wrestling photograph montage was admitted during his examination, and a previously admitted photograph was shown. Aloke Chakravarty declined cross-examination, and Howard was excused.
