About
Jane Richard appeared in testimony and photographic evidence as a six-year-old survivor of the bombing outside the Forum restaurant. Her father, William Richard, testified that he found her after the explosion, saw that she had lost a leg, and carried her across Boylston Street to seek medical help. He described accompanying her to Children's Hospital and the removal of shrapnel from multiple parts of her body. Matthew Patterson testified that he assessed her injuries and applied a borrowed belt as a tourniquet to control bleeding. Michelle Gamble identified Jane in a photograph taken shortly before the blast, wearing a green coat near Martin and William Richard.
The prosecution discussed Jane's injuries and rescue in its guilt-phase closing argument. During the penalty-phase closing, Steven Mellin invoked her injuries and her father's efforts to obtain help as part of the government's argument about harm to victims and families. In an unsworn statement at sentencing, Michael Chase recalled holding the tourniquet while Patterson carried Jane toward emergency personnel.
