Matthew Riportella authenticated firing-range records and surveillance footage concerning the Tsarnaev brothers. He described Dzhokhar's recorded handgun rentals and payment while qualifying his ammunition interpretation and identification of Tamerlan.

About
Matthew Riportella testified for the prosecution on Day 38 about records and surveillance footage he obtained from a Manchester firing range on April 23, 2013. The FBI agent authenticated the material, and Exhibits 1164 and 1165 were admitted without objection.
Riportella read Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's record as documenting two rented 9 mm handguns, roughly an hour at the range, and a total payment of $170.75. He said someone else had told him that four ammunition marks meant four boxes. Based on Tamerlan's card, he said it showed no rental, purchase, or payment. Both brothers' forms reported intermediate handgun experience; those entries were self-reported responses, not Riportella's independent assessment.
The video discussion placed the footage shortly after a March 20 range visit. Riportella identified Dzhokhar on the left and said he believed Tamerlan was on the right, based on images he had previously seen. He also corrected his reading of the second firearm model from Glock 39 to what he believed was Glock 34. The defense asked no questions.
