About
Naida Suleimanova testified for the defense on Day 57 about Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's childhood and his relationship with Tamerlan. She recalled frequent childhood contact, described Jahar as kind and caring, and said he loved his older brother. She also described a family custom of listening to older siblings and following their example.
Family photographs were displayed, and three were admitted into evidence. Suleimanova corrected one photograph's date from 2004 to 1994 after counsel sought clarification. Her account gave conflicting dates of 2002 and 2000 for her last contact with Jahar, without resolving the discrepancy. She became emotional about seeing him after many years; the court allowed her to say that it was difficult but stopped a follow-up question asking why.
Suleimanova described both happiness and fear when meeting Tamerlan in 2012, explaining that she had been told he adhered to radical Islam. After a contested sidebar, the court allowed her to identify his recorded voice but barred general commentary and subjective reactions to the recording. Comparisons with his earlier statements required a basis in her own interactions with him. She identified Tamerlan in two short audio portions and said she did not understand the religious ideas discussed. The recording and displayed transcript were admitted as exhibits 3306-J and 3306-K. The prosecution asked no cross-examination questions.
