About
Robert Ponte testified for the defense on Day 53 about teaching Tamerlan Tsarnaev in a beginning jazz ensemble at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School during the 2004–2005 school year. He recalled a polite, respectful but socially isolated student. His testimony developed background about Tamerlan's school participation, not his relationship with or influence over Dzhokhar.
Ponte said he admitted Tamerlan despite limited piano training, hoping the ensemble would offer a community connection. Tamerlan initially made an effort but struggled as the work became harder, despite extra help. When warned that he might not perform in the spring concert, he glared and argued respectfully. Ponte felt uncomfortable but did not suspect a physical altercation. Tamerlan later withdrew with an agreed C.
Ponte confined his social observations to the classroom and explained how a colleague's conversation revived his memories after the bombing. A school document was admitted without objection, and the court limited questioning, including a question about his reaction to the bombing news. On cross-examination, Ponte confirmed that the class began in 2004, nine years before the bombing, and that Tamerlan had wanted to participate despite limited piano ability. He was then excused.
