Mark Preble authenticated Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's UMass Dartmouth records and explained dormitory card-access entries, cautioning that a recorded swipe did not necessarily establish a door opening. He also read Tsarnaev's financial-aid appeal; the defense asked no questions.

About
Mark Preble authenticated five university records concerning Dzhokhar Tsarnaev during the prosecution's presentation on Day 38. As UMass Dartmouth's vice chancellor of administration and finance and chief financial officer, he explained the records under questioning by Aloke Chakravarty. The court admitted them subject to a discussion at sidebar.
Preble described Pine Dale card-access entries from April 16 through April 18, 2013, distinguishing a card swipe from a recorded door opening. He explained that an entry could show a swipe without the door contact registering an opening, identified front-door contact problems, and noted that leaving did not require a swipe. He was unsure why two swipes occurred seconds apart and offered only a possible explanation.
Preble also read Tsarnaev's January 24 financial-aid appeal, in which Tsarnaev attributed academic difficulties to losses of relatives and stress and described conditions in Chechnya. Preble said his understanding was that the appeal had been denied. He identified academic and housing records as well. The defense asked no questions, and the court excused him.
