Judith Russell testified for the defense about changes in her daughter Katherine during her relationship with Tamerlan Tsarnaev and the family's efforts to maintain contact. She qualified her observations and resisted broader conclusions about Tamerlan's persuasiveness and relatives' beliefs; she said she had never met Dzhokhar.

About
Judith Russell testified for the defense on Day 53 about her daughter Katherine's relationship with Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Under Judy Clarke's questioning, she described unsuccessful efforts to discourage the relationship and the family's continued support, including avoiding disputed topics to preserve contact with Katherine and her granddaughter. She distinguished concerns about the relationship from opposition to Islam and did not attribute Katherine's religious interest solely to Tamerlan.
Russell described Tamerlan's repeated efforts to discuss religion with her but qualified her ability to assess changes after his return from Russia, saying she believed she saw him only once, briefly. The court excluded a proposed secondhand account of alleged domestic abuse because it involved multiple layers of hearsay. Defense Exhibits 3404 and 3401, photographs whose dates Russell could not establish with certainty, were admitted without objection. The court sustained questions about her suspicions of Tamerlan's involvement in the bombing; those questions produced no admitted answer. She said she had never met Jahar.
On cross-examination, William Weinreb explored Tamerlan's persistence, Katherine's independence, and Russell's opposition to the match. Russell acknowledged that Tamerlan had some charm and made sustained efforts to interest her in religion, but limited her assessment of his persuasiveness to herself. She could not identify the source or timing of her understanding about religious pressure on the Tsarnaev sisters and declined to infer their wishes. She agreed Katherine was recovering from her husband's death and the Marathon events but rejected treating those experiences as the sole explanation for her return toward her former self.
On redirect, Russell qualified her impressions of Zubeidat by explaining that they had spoken for only a few minutes at a baby shower years earlier. She described Katherine as becoming more serious and somewhat isolated during her relationship with Tamerlan. Asked about reduced isolation, she said Katherine was less serious but could not elaborate further. Russell was then excused.
