About
Ailina Tsarnaev appeared in family testimony and photographs as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's sister, with substantial discussion during defense witness Elmirza Khozhugov's testimony about their former marriage. On direct examination, Khozhugov acknowledged striking Ailina, being arrested, and their subsequent separation and divorce. He also said their son was initially supposed to return to her, but that he decided against returning him after the bombings and identification of suspects. At a sidebar, prosecutors argued that marital and custody conflict could show bias against Ailina and her mother, Zubeidat. The judge said animosity could be explored in a non-inflammatory way and that a custody dispute might be fair ground for questioning, but rejected kidnapping terminology. Cross-examination later tested whether the separation and reduced family contact limited Khozhugov's knowledge of the household.
Other witnesses identified Ailina in childhood and Norfolk Street family photographs. Tiarrah Dottin recalled a friendship with her at Morse School lasting about a year or two, and said she later recognized Dzhokhar's resemblance to Ailina when they met in high school. During Michel Reynolds's recross-examination about older-brother leadership traditions, Weinreb posed a question suggesting that Ailina and Bella had said their family lacked a leadership pattern. The judge sustained an objection because the question exceeded the scope of redirect; Reynolds did not adopt its premise.
